Jan Nowlen

I am Jan Nowlen and am continuing as one of two VISTA members working with the UWEX-Richland 4-H Youth Development and UW-Richland Continuing Education and Outreach Programs in Richland Center, WI with a second year appointment. Before becoming a VISTA worker I was an elementary school teacher in Portage, WI for 36 years, where I promoted and helped implement activities to include community members, parents, and volunteers in the district’s programming during and beyond the regular school day hours and enjoyed working with student teachers. When my parents became ill I left my teaching position. I have one son who is an Agronomy major at UW-Platteville. My husband is a retired UW-Madison CALS Intern Coordinator. We farm and I love doing anything outdoors among many other interests.
My VISTA work will include continuing to monitor the 4-H Horse and Shooting Sports projects’ activities, to provide Cultural Arts project opportunities, and to expand our afterschool program base while creating a sustainable framework. I will continue working with the Riverdale School District in cooperation with Riverway Communities of Hope. My supervisor, Pam Hobson, and I are partnering with Iowa and Sauk County Extension 4-H Youth Development staff members in cooperation with the River Valley School District to provide a new Delayed Start Day Program. We look forward to pursuing “pilot” programs at Jefferson and St. Mary’s Schools in Richland Center and hope to give Ithaca and Weston the opportunity to benefit from “best practices.”
