Going Forward with Founders

Founders are individuals that are so closely tied to an organization or a project that they are not able to accept change. Founders typically exhibit characteristics that allow them to maintain control of the organization despite pressure to change. Volunteers that exhibit Founder's Syndrome prevent an organization from reaching their mission.

This page includes resources for staff to teach volunteers and other staff about going forward with founders in their organization. This includes a teaching lesson plan that includes handouts and hands on activities. The Power Point accompanies the lesson plan. The lessons, tools and Power Point has been presented at national, regional and state workshops to both professional staff and volunteers. The evaluations continue to rate the workshop very high in providing insights and solutions to help organizations to go forward with founders.

Paula Rogers Huff, Associate Professor and 4-H Youth Development Educator in Oconto County Wisconsin, published a philosophical paper with the Department of Youth Development in 2003. Founder's Syndrome and 4-H Leaders Organizations has provided the foundation for these educational tools.
