Description

Poultry is a statewide 4-H project. It features curriculum that will guide you through the project. For a copy contact your County 4-H Office or order online at: Extension Publications.

Poultry 1
This beginning project is aimed at grades 3-5. It’s not necessary that you own an animal. Activities include identifying poultry breeds, parts of a bird, and parts and functions of eggs; cooking eggs; designing a brooding arrangement for chicks; handling poultry; selecting pullets; fitting and showing poultry; and more.

Poultry 2
This intermediate project is aimed at grades 6-8. Learn to observe a healthy flock, identify parts and functions of a bird’s skeleton, discover how an egg is formed, select and judge broilers, determine peck order, select hens for egg production, imprint with chicks, prevent poultry diseases, and more.

Poultry 3
This advanced project is aimed at grades 9-12. Learn to organize a judging clinic, manage a laying flock, mount a chicken skeleton, discover qualities of eggs, handle poultry products safely, process a chicken, explore poultry-related careers, and more.

Poultry Project Training
Many counties hold local training for members and leaders in their favorite project areas, including poultry. Watch your county 4-H Family newsletter or contact your county Extension office for details.

Wisconsin 4-H Area Animal Science Days
Series of four day-long events held around the state where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons workshops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops for small animal projects, which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas.

Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Conference
If you’re in grades 8-10, check out the next Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Conference, scheduled each June at the UW-Madison campus. The conference offers educational seminars in most areas of 4-H. Contact your county Extension office for details.

Wisconsin State Fair
Annual 11-day event held in August at State Fair Park, West Allis, WI. Events include the Avian Quiz Bowl, a contest that tests knowledge of avian anatomy and physiology, poultry management, chicken breeds and varieties, and eggs and egg products. Teams of three or four members compete head-to-head in a game-show format.

Poultry Press Newspaper
Poultry Press is a monthly publication for those who raise, show or have an interest in poultry. This site provides articles, merchandise, as well as subscription information.

Poultry Science Club
For UW-Madison students with an interest in poultry. Meetings are held monthly. Activities include trips to Atlanta for the International Poultry Expo (each January) and to St. Paul for the Midwest Poultry Convention (each March).

National 4-H “Embryology in the Classroom” Project
Features classroom hatching projects and classroom experiments in poultry science for elementary and middle school youth.

University of Nebraska, Lincoln County 4-H
Interesting embryology information, including photos and movie clips on incubating and candling eggs.

U. S. Poultry & Egg Association
The Association is the world’s largest poultry organization. It represents the entire industry as an “All Feather” association, including producers and processors of broilers, turkeys, ducks, eggs, and breeding stock, as well as allied companies. The Association sponsors the International Poultry Exposition.
