Entomology
Description
Entomology is a national 4-H project. It features curriculum that will guide you through the project. For a copy contact your County 4-H Office or order online at National 4-H Service Supply. For additional curriculum possibilities, explore the National Directory of 4-H Materials and do a key word search for Entomology.
Entomology 1
What you can do in this project: learn about insects, their behavior and life history; discover the parts of an insect’s body; collect and compare insects; explore how insects communicate and move.
Grades: 3-5

What you can do in this project: learn how an insect protects itself; explore insect habitats; create an insect display; build an insect extractor; investigate entomology careers.
Grades: 6-8

What you can do in this project: raise and study mealworms and mosquitoes; observe a colony of ants; make an insect identification key; record and collect aquatic insects; explore various gardens and habitats.

Entomology Project Training
Many counties hold local training for members and leaders in
their favorite project areas, including entomology. The Wisconsin
Honey Producers Association (WHPA) also sponsors an annual hone
bee poster contest that you might want to enter. Watch your county
4-H Family newsletter or contact your county Extension office for
details.
Wisconsin 4-H and Youth
Conference
If you’re in grades 8-10, check out the next Wisconsin
4-H and Youth Conference, scheduled each June at the UW-Madison
campus. The conference offers educational seminars in most areas
of 4-H. Contact your county Extension office for details.

 Going Buggy: Overview (2 pages, 71 KB) Overview of a series of 4-H Afterschool activities on "Going Buggy . . . With Insects," including building a bug, taking a feeding hike, and doing a bug walk.
- Going Buggy: Evaluation (3 pages, 72 KB) Instrument to evaluate the "Going Buggy . . . With Insects" series of 4-H Afterschool activities.
- Going Buggy: 4-H Project Box Contents (3 pages, 131 KB) List of lesson plans and materials to complete the five entomology activities in the “Going Buggy” 4-H Afterschool series.
- Going Buggy: Bug Walk (2 pages, 87 KB) Youth learn that many insects walk by using their legs to create "alternating triangles." Includes observing insect specimens with scopes and performing a "bug walk."
- Going Buggy: Hungry as a Caterpillar (2 pages, 92 KB) Youth learn that insects grow and develop as do all living things. Includes a feeding hike to see what caterpillars and other insects eat.
- Going Buggy: I Spy, Describing Insects (2 pages, 76 KB) Youth identify physical and behavioral characteristics of insects. Includes building a cricket house and observing crickets.
- Going Buggy: Lupine and Butterflies (2 pages, 118 KB) Youth are introduced to the concept that living things grow and develop. Includes studying the life cycle of a butterfly and creating a butterfly.
- Going Buggy: Three Body Parts (2 pages, 65 KB) Youth name the three body parts common to all insects. Includes singing the bug body song and making a model of an insect.

County Fair
The county fair . . . what a great time it is! Every summer, families
flock to county fairs to see the latest 4-H project exhibits. Exhibiting
is a fun and educational way for youth to showcase their project
work to judges and to the public.
Judging materials are supported by Bill Shaw in memory of his wife, Shirley.
