Description

Clothing is a statewide 4-H project. It features curriculum that will guide you through the project. For a copy contact your County 4-H Office or order online at: Extension Publications.

Clothing 1
In this beginning project, identify sewing tools and sewing machine parts, stitch on a serger, thread a sewing machine, identify types of fibers and fabrics, identify types of seam finishes, select and purchase a pattern, sew and clip a curved seam, sort clothes for laundry, remove stains, donate a sewn project, and more.

Clothing 2
In this intermediate sewing project, enhance your sewing skills beyond the basics. Identify types of fabric construction, natural and man-made fibers, and types of fabric coloration; make a patch pocket, insert a lapped zipper, sew buttonholes and different seam finishes; use pressing tools and thread a serger; read International Care Symbols; research different laundry products; set a price for textile products; plan and organize a community service project; and more.

Clothing 3
In this advanced sewing project, use specialized sewing tools or equipment; combine patterns to create a design; create outdoor wear; design and embellish a garment; sew with fabric containing spandex; identify clothing styles that enhance figures; use a computer to print on fabric; plan and conduct a style revue; study careers that work with fibers and textiles; and more.

Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Conference
If you're in grades 8-10, check out the next Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Conference, scheduled each June at the UW-Madison campus. The conference offers educational seminars in most areas of 4-H. Contact your county Extension office for details.

Wisconsin State Fair Activity Stations
Each Activity Station features fun, hands-on activities on Visual Arts, Sewing, Woodworking, Agriculture and other topics. Coordinators need youth to help staff the stations and teach young fairgoers. Look for latest information under Wisconsin State Fair Youth Expo.

Wisconsin State Fair Clothing Revue
4-H youth model clothing that they've made themselves in an almost-professional run-way fashion show during the state fair each August. Look for latest information under Wisconsin State Fair Youth Expo.

County FairCounty fair clothing exhibits.

The county fair . . . what a great time it is! Every summer, families flock to county fairs to see the latest 4-H project exhibits. Exhibiting is a fun and educational way for youth to showcase their project work to judges and to the public. Judging materials are supported by Bill Shaw in memory of his wife, Shirley.
