Sessions on Wheels

Capture the SpiritCapture the Spirit

Come to the 2007 North Central Region Volunteer Forum and capture the culture of Milwaukee and its greater metroplitan area through the Forum's exciting educational tours or "Sessions on Wheels."

If you arrive early, you'll want to take the "must-see" Tour of Milwaukee Landmarks. During the conference, you can go on a scavenger hunt at the Milwaukee Public Zoo; enjoy the beautiful domed stadium, Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers major league baseball team; shop at Milwaukee's famous Public Market; dabble in watercolors with Milwaukee Artist Linda Lubner; experience nature with Milwaukee Naturalist David Stokes; or go skating at the Pettit National Ice Center, training site for many U.S. Olympic speed skating champions. Read all about the sessions below, or click here for a print-friendly list.

Pre-conference: Tour of Milwaukee LandmarksMilwaukee Art Museum
Join us early for an afternoon of some of Milwaukee’s most famous landmarks. We’ll start with a behind the scenes tour at Milwaukee’s most famous brewery, Miller Brewing. This tour is about an hour long, and includes outdoor walking, so please dress appropriately. Non-alcoholic beverages will be served at the end of the tour. We’ll then take a bus ride through some of the “Streets of Old Milwaukee,” and we’ll end our afternoon at the world famous Milwaukee Art Museum, where you’ll be able to experience the closing of the Brise Soleil, a one of a kind architectural wonder. Admission to the Art Museum is not included, and you can choose if you’d like to venture inside to explore, or perhaps take a stroll along Milwaukee’s incredible lakefront.

Milwaukee Public Market illustrationMilwaukee Public Market and Cooking Demonstrations
Take a “Stroll for Cooking Knowledge” at Milwaukee’s Famous Public Market. Watch cooking demonstrations, learn about different organic foods, fish, spices, wines, and much more. There’s also a “Something Special from Wisconsin” store to pick up some treats to take back home. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and the aromas are delectable. This would be a great tour for Foods leaders, and it’s a learning experience for the new cook as well as the “seasoned” ones.

Miller Park/Uke’s Harley Davidson TourMiller Park photo
More than a decade of planning and four and a half years of construction culminated in grand fashion at 7:17 p.m. on April 6, 2001, when the Milwaukee Brewers kicked off their Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds. Experience the magnificence of Miller Park’s signature fan-shaped convertible roof while enjoying an exclusive tour that includes the dugout, luxury suites, clubhouse, press box, Bob Uecker’s broadcast booth, and other behind-the-scenes attractions. We’ll then travel to Uke’s Harley-Davidson in Kenosha for a chance to tour the store, see the new 2008 bikes on the all-new showroom floor, and visit Uke’s museum. There is walking involved on this tour, so please dress appropriately.

Retrofit Yourself at the Pettit National Ice Center
Join us for an afternoon of fun and exercise at the Pettit National Ice Center and Olympic Training facility. We’ll take a tour to see how everything’s kept cold, and we’ll also have some time to get on the ice and enjoy some laps around the rink. Many of the U.S. Olympic Speed Skaters have trained at this site, and many of the current track records belong to recent Olympians, like Shani Davis and Chad Hendrick. Dress warmly, as the rink is kept cool.Milwaukee Zoo photo

Scavenger Hunt at the Milwaukee County Zoo
Team up with the Milwaukee County Zoo 4-H associates as they “scavenge” the Milwaukee Public Zoo for intriguing knowledge about exotic animals, their cares and their habitats. Catch the 4-H spirit in this fun-filled outdoor adventure. Dress appropriately, wear walking shoes, and be ready to track down knowledge.

“The Frog Chorus” with David Stokes
If you’re a Naturespace or Exploring leader, then this is the session for you! Spend an afternoon with Naturalist David Stokes who will entertain and inspire you. He truly makes science FUN!! David has a solid educational background in the natural sciences, holding a Masters of Science in Conservation Education from Michigan State University. He has been creating exciting learning situations since 1974. Prior to 2001 David worked for 18 years at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center (National Audubon Society) in Milwaukee as Education Specialist and Director of Education.

Watercolor Adventures
Experiment with water colors to learn fun techniques and develop art skills that draw on creativity. You will learn 50 techniques, in addition to calligraphy. This would be a great opportunity for exploring leaders, drawing and painting leaders, and anybody who wants to try something new!! Painting supplies/kits are included in the price, and the seminar will be held at a local art store, so additional supplies will be available for purchase.
