WISCONSIN 4-H FOUNDATION’S AUCTION AT THE STATE FAIR RAISES FUNDS FOR WISCONSIN 4-H YOUTH

It was a beautiful night for Wisconsin 4-H youth, as the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processers winning entries from the Wisconsin State Fair’s Meat Products Show were donated to the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation’s 18th Annual Governor’s Sweepstakes Meat Products Auction. The funds raised from the auction will be used for Wisconsin 4-H youth programs statewide benefiting all of the nearly 100,000 Wisconsin 4-H youth.  The Auction was held on Tuesday evening, August 11th , at the Wisconsin State Fair and rapidly raised over $36,000 for 4-H, through bids, donations, and sponsorships. Both the weather and the buyers responded positively to make it a great evening for Wisconsin 4-H.

A special moment of the auction was the recognition of a 30-year 4-H supporter, Henry Herdeman of Cudahy.  Herdeman, who passed away in November, 2008, was represented by his family, who were presented with the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation’s highest honor, the President’s Award.  Presenting the award, which notes the exemplary contributions and service that Henry Herdeman made in support of Wisconsin 4-H was the 4-H Foundation’s President, LeRoy Haeuser.  Accepting the award in his father’s memory was Gene Herdeman and his family.

A highlight of the auction was the special donation pledges for 4-H Youth Leadership Development activities, raising $4,500 in just a few minutes.  15 auction participants pledged $300 each to help build youth leadership skills after State 4-H Youth Leader Council Past-President Loren Daentl shared some of his 4-H leadership experiences. Developing youth as leaders is a major goal of the Wisconsin 4-H program.

Chancellor of UW Colleges and UW-Extension David Wilson introduced Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle.  Governor Doyle welcomed the 180 meat processors, bidders and 4-H youth and emphasized the value of 4-H in Wisconsin before turning over the gavel to Auctioneers Gary Finley and Bob Johnson. Tim Talen, State 4-H Arts & Communications Specialist, was the announcer for the auction.  LeRoy Haeuser, Wisconsin 4-H Foundation Board President, received a $3,000 sponsorship check from the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors, presented by their President, John Haen of Haen Meat Packing, Inc. in Kaukauna.

Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors Meats the Challenge!

The Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors (WAMP) stepped up and made its 9th  annual contribution of $3000 to help fund Wisconsin 4-H Foundation programs.  WAMP’s generous support is of great benefit to the nearly 100,000 Wisconsin youth who are involved in 4-H activities.

WAMP has been a donor to the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation for 22 years. They also collaborate with the Foundation to organize the annual Governor’s Sweepstakes Meat Products Auction fundraiser. In addition to the $3000 check, the meat processors donate their winning entries from the State Fair Meat Products Show to the auction to raise funds in support of 4-H youth statewide.

WAMP has been working for the benefit and protection of small and medium sized meat firms since 1945. The Association represents independent meat plant operators to the regulatory agencies and the state legislature WAMP, through these generally small, family-owned businesses, has annually displayed great generosity in supporting 4-H values and youth through their annual gift to the Foundation.

Director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, Pat Harrington, expressed her gratitude for the donation efforts which have made youth programs possible throughout the years. “Thanks to WAMP, our youth can now look forward to more successful 4-H programs. Their awesome support helps us to give all Wisconsin 4-H youth a chance for a better future.”
